What is Reiki ?

Reiki is a Japanese word that translates into “universal life force”. “Rei” come from the word meaning “sacred” or “spiritual” and “Ki” comes from a word meaning “energy”

“...Reiki means ‘spiritual energy’; it can be described as the energy of everything. To work with this energy is to experience life at its fullest, to be one with all that can be seen and not seen. The system was created to give us this full life experience so that we may remember our connection to life and live in alignment with it.”

While Reiki is anywhere and everywhere, the art of Reiki that we are familiar with in the West was channeled and experienced by Dr. Usui Mikao. Since the word “Reiki” was already recognized in Japan as it related to a healing practice, Dr. Usui termed his method as Usui Reiki Rhoyo. This was to distinguish the nuanced vibrational properties that were experienced by him, which he would later teach to his students .

Many people report a feeling of deep relaxation, a sense of peace and calm. Some people even fall asleep. The person receiving Reiki will typically lie down on a massage table with a blanket (optional) for approximately 1 hour. There may be meditative music playing or none if you prefer. Reiki uses hands to transmit healing energy, either by hovering just over the body or lightly placing hands on the body ranging from the head to the feet. If there is an area that you would like to focus on or an area that you would like me to move around, we will make sure that request is honored at the start of our session.

I will typically scan the body before I start and either begin at an area that I am drawn to or begin at the head and work down towards the feet.

Your experience can vary. Sometimes, people feel sensations moving throughout the body, while other people do not perceive any change at all. Neither is good or bad. There is a saying in the Reiki community. “Reiki is intelligent and knows where to go” and everyone experiences Reki differently and uniquely.

While most sessions are silent, it does not have to be. You are always welcome to dialogue with me, to ask questions or relay your experience while on the table.

During the session I may receive information through the form of heat or tingling in my hands or body, as well as get impressions or feelings that may ask to be shared at the end of our session.

What can I experience during a Reiki session?

How can Reiki help me?

There is a science behind it! While Reiki treatment should not be used as a substitute for a physician’s care or a psychotherapist, it complements other types of medical and therapeutic treatments, and it can increase the efficacy of other types of healing.

Reiki promotes relaxation, stress reduction and symptom relief to improve overall health and well-being. It can:

  • Bring on a meditative state.

  • Foster tissue and bone healing after injury or surgery.

  • Stimulate your body’s immune system.

  • Promote natural self-healing.

  • Relieve pain and tension.

  • Support the well-being of people receiving traditional medical treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, surgery and kidney dialysis.

Studies show that reiki treatment may create feelings of:

  • Peace.

  • Relaxation.

  • Security.

  • Wellness.
